Oregon was once a Republican stronghold. This politician started shifting the balance in 1954
For much of the first half of the 20th century, Oregon was effectively a one-party Republican state. Democrats had not won a U.S. Senate seat in 40 years, had not won a U.S. House seat in 18 years, and had controlled the state legislature for only four of 74 years since 1880. Into this landscape emerged Richard Neuberger, a Portland-born journalist of Jewish heritage whose prolific writing career, progressive convictions and remarkable personal drive would reshape Oregon politics.

Alaska Science Forum Time Capsule: Bats in the belfry
Note: Ned Rozell wrote this column on Oct. 25, 1994, his first as the new author of the Alaska Science Forum. I’m pleased to feature this time capsule, as it explores one of my favorite questions in biology: How do mammals survive in intensely cold temperatures? Additionally, Ned ended the story with, in my opinion, a perfectly silly final sentence. Ned published an update on Alaska’s little brown bats in 2019: https://bit.ly/bat-update. — Sara Wilbur

AI Lost Big in the Midterms. What Does That Mean for Your Business?
The message of the “AI midterms” is that technology policy has become an electoral issue, not just a regulatory one. In the U.S., the longstanding embrace of “permissionless innovation” may be fading. If that’s the case, technology companies and their customers face a rapidly changing political environment. What should business leaders do? Many will continue to follow individual bills, lawsuits, elections, and agency proceedings as separate events. This is an essential element of any business’s strategy. But standing alone, it misses the larger picture of how these activities affect each other. Leaders should put together a team to follow six battleground issues: liability for tech-related harms, privacy and data access, competition, infrastructure, public subsidies and other government resources, and preemption and overlapping authority.
