Multi-generational business expertise: How legacies in local businesses find sustained success
Join us Sept. 29 for our third Power Breakfast of 2026 as business leaders share how they leverage decades of institutional wisdom. The Greater Fayetteville Business Journal invites you to join us for our third quarterly Power Breakfast, The Family Business Advantage: How Third-Generation Leaders Drive Longevity and Innovation, where business owners, executives and community leaders will come together to explore how multi-generational leadership creates lasting success. We are proud to welcome CEO of Holmes Security Systems, Stephen Wheeler; Director of Communications for Copiers Plus, Drew Smith; Inside Sales at Hubbard Supplyhouse, Mary Grace Hurley; and Managing Partner of Luigi’s Italian Chophouse & Bar, Nate Ernst, as our featured panelists. Representing the third generation of leadership within their family businesses, each brings a unique perspective on honoring decades of tradition while embracing new ideas, technologies and strategies that drive long-term growth. Together, with moderator Lauren Willets, Director of the Family Enterprise Center at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, they will share the challenges, opportunities and lessons learned from leading established organizations into the future.“Growing up in a family business gave me a unique perspective on what business can be. I saw the pride my grandfather and father took in knowing someone was a Copiers Plus customer, and the deep responsibility they felt to support our employees and the families who depended on the business. Seeing that sense of connection firsthand is what drew me to the business, and the legacy they built continues to drive me today. I’m excited to be part of the conversation about how family businesses can honor what previous generations built while continuing to grow and evolve for the future,” shared panelist Drew Smith. “We are so excited to welcome our panelists highlighting long-standing Fayetteville family businesses. This theme has certainly piqued the interest of the business community even beyond Fayetteville. I’m excited to pass the moderator baton over to Lauren Willets. With her background and expertise in the subject, she’s sure to unlock some great talking points and perspectives that will keep the conversation fresh and interesting to our guests. “We are so excited to welcome our panelists highlighting long-standing Fayetteville family businesses. In Good Health: The Matter Of Maternal Mental Health Care
The Lindsay Clancy murder trial captivated the American public for weeks.Prosecutors charged Clancy with murdering her three children. They say she then tried to take her own life and that her injuries left her paralyzed from the waist down. Clancy’s lawyers say she was experiencing postpartum psychosis and should not be held criminally responsible. But prosecutors say she planned the deaths. After seven days of deliberation, the jury remained deadlocked and the case ended in a mistrial. The trial has divided the nation and sparked conversations over about maternal mental health, raising questions over gaps in care for parents after giving birth. About one in five expecting or postpartum women in the U.S. experience mental health disorders. And according to a 2025 study, overall maternal mental health has dramatically dropped in the past seven years, with only 25 percent of moms reporting excellent mental health. What do we know – and don’t know – about maternal mental health care? And how can our systems be bolstered to help those who need it most after giving birth? If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or thinking of harming yourself, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 by phone and text. The National Maternal Mental Health Hotline is also available 24/7. You can text, call or chat at 1-833-TLC-MAMA. Scientists want to 3D print houses on Mars with the help of yeast
Mars is a terrible place to build a house. It’s bitterly cold, blasted by radiation, and a near vacuum. Not to mention that the building materials, even for a modest shelter, could spend months hurtling through space before construction begins. But they don’t have to. In a study publishing September 10 in the journal Chem Circularity, researchers developed a recipe that could one day be used to 3D print houses on Mars. The recipe combines Martian rocks with Earthly ingredients: gelatin and yeast. Once dried and hardened, this living building material is as strong as low-grade concrete and can be broken down, recycled, and brewed again for new construction.
