How generational turnover and party switching reshape the US political map

Political polarisation has increased dramatically in the US in recent decades and is often linked to partisan geographic segregation. This column presents new evidence from 2008 to 2020 that reveals an increase in partisan segregation even at very local levels. However, while most studies focus on one explanatory factor, residential mobility, we find that generational change (in Democratic-trending areas) and Democrats leaving their party (in Republican-trending areas) explain a much larger share of the rise in partisan segregation.

The Iran War Is Giving Democrats a Chance. Will They Take It?

Last week, Republicans in Congress rejected a war powers resolution and thus negated their own power. In so doing, they gave President Donald Trump free rein over the Iran conflict and tied themselves to a war that has no consistent justification, no clear end and little public support. Democrats voted largely in lockstep to curtail Trump’s power, the first move in a process that will become more substantial as the already-unpopular war continues. AI discovers the hidden signal of liquid-like ion flow in solid-state batteries

Solid-state batteries could be safer and more energy-dense than today’s lithium-ion technology, but finding materials that allow ions to move quickly through solid electrolytes has been difficult. Researchers developed a machine learning pipeline that predicts Raman spectra and identifies a distinctive low-frequency signal linked to liquid-like ion motion inside crystals. This signal appears when rapid ion movement temporarily disrupts a crystal’s symmetry. The approach could dramatically speed up the discovery of superionic materials for advanced batteries.
