Alaska Science Forum Time Capsule: Bats in the belfry
Note: Ned Rozell wrote this column on Oct. 25, 1994, his first as the new author of the Alaska Science Forum. I’m pleased to feature this time capsule, as it explores one of my favorite questions in biology: How do mammals survive in intensely cold temperatures? AI Lost Big in the Midterms. What Does That Mean for Your Business?
The message of the “AI midterms” is that technology policy has become an electoral issue, not just a regulatory one. In the U.S., the longstanding embrace of “permissionless innovation” may be fading. If that’s the case, technology companies and their customers face a rapidly changing political environment. What should business leaders do? Many will continue to follow individual bills, lawsuits, elections, and agency proceedings as separate events. This is an essential element of any business’s strategy. But standing alone, it misses the larger picture of how these activities affect each other. Leaders should put together a team to follow six battleground issues: liability for tech-related harms, privacy and data access, competition, infrastructure, public subsidies and other government resources, and preemption and overlapping authority.
