Anthropic's Claude Science creates the first complete ultraviolet map of the sky
Astrophysicist Brice Ménard of Johns Hopkins University used Anthropic's Claude Science to map the entire sky in ultraviolet light for the first time. AI agents downloaded data from multiple space missions, calibrated it, and filled in gaps using inpainting. Predictions averaged about ten percent deviation from actual measurements. Ménard sees the project as an example of research that simply wouldn't have gotten done without AI.
Scientists Can Now Watch Auroras in Broad Daylight From Space and It's As Stunning As It Sounds
SMILE can see auroras hidden by sunlight and watch entire magnetic storms develop.
Scientists report world’s first working nuclear clocks
In two papers in Nature, scientists from Europe and China have now reported the world’s first working nuclear clocks. While teams from Beijing and Shanghai embedded thorium-229 nuclei in calcium fluoride crystals and fired an ultraviolet laser at them, the effort from Austria, the Czech Republic, and Germany realised a similar nuclear clock and used it to look for dark matter.
Science begins for Smile
On 23 September, the European-Chinese Smile mission was declared ready to start revealing how Earth responds to the wind of charged particles from the Sun. This follows a busy in-space commissioning period since the spacecraft launched on 19 May and reached its target orbit for science operations on 20 June.

Scientists Thought Venus Was Too Acidic for Complex Chemistry. It May Actually Be Weirdly Hospitable
MIT researchers recreated a Venus-like stew of 98% sulfuric acid to test complex signaling molecules, like peptides, in the lab. Looks like they passed.
A 60-beam ultraviolet laser flash-vaporized the surface of tiny diamonds so the blast would kick a shock wave through them, melting the hardest material on Earth at 12,680 degrees and 145 million psi, and solid diamond turned out to float on its own melt like ice on water
The experiments ran on the OMEGA laser at the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics, which fires 60 ultraviolet beams into a target
Pink Jupiter?! The science behind this psychedelic view of the gas giant is key to what makes the planet tick
Hubble Space Telescope captured an image of Jupiter in ultraviolet light as part of a study to 3D-map the gas giant's cloud system.
UV light reveals possible camouflage on a 125-million-year-old crocodile
A 125-million-year-old crocodile fossil has revealed preserved skin, possible sensory organs, sophisticated respiratory structures, and an unexpected pattern on its tail. Ultraviolet light exposed alternating bands that may represent ancient camouflage, potentially preserving the oldest known coloration in a crocodylomorph.
Scientists discover mysterious new X-ray objects 'unlike any they have seen before'
Faint in X-rays but bright in ultraviolet light, new objects found by NASA's Chandra space telescope could help solve two great astrophysical mysteries.
Fusion energy finds a new national defense market
Fusion energy, long viewed primarily as a potential source of clean electricity, is taking on a new potential role in national defense, The Wall Street Journal reports. Denver-based fusion startup Xcimer Energy has partnered with aerospace and defense company RTX on a roughly $50 million development agreement, including an RTX investment, to develop pulsed ultraviolet […]
Amendment 68: New Opportunity: D.8 Habitable Worlds Observatory Precursor Science Investigations
The Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) is a large-aperture ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared observatory concept recommended by the National Academies of
UCLA scientists develop mineral sunscreen without the chalky white cast
Scientists have redesigned zinc oxide particles to create a mineral sunscreen that protects against ultraviolet radiation without leaving such a noticeable white cast. The SPF 30 formula could make sunscreen easier and more appealing to use across a wider range of skin tones.
Sunscreen gets an upgrade | Investors Lab
There are hundreds of brands of sunscreen available in the United States, but not one of them contains an ingredient we all need. Bemotrizinol, a highly effective, broad-spectrum chemical ultraviolet ray blocker, has been available in Europe for decades but absent from U.S. shelves. The regulatory bottleneck was driven by a 2011 U.S. Food and Drug Administration policy classifying sunscreens as drugs. While the classification remains, consumers and innovators can welcome the news that the FDA has officially approved bemotrizinol, effective August 9, 2026. Science News's Meghan Rosen provides the coverage.
Hubble Science in the 2030s White Paper: High-Contrast Optical and UV Spectroscopy with HST/STIS
The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope currently stands as the sole space-based astronomical facility providing visible-light coronagraphic imaging — and the only facility anywhere that can perform both visible- and ultraviolet-light coronagraphic spectroscopy. In imaging, STIS offers unparalleled stability that rivals the performance of ground-based direct imaging in the optical, […]
Scientists Think Dark Matter May Be Filling Our Galaxy With Mysterious Light
No theory could explain the slight excess of far-ultraviolet light in the Milky Way until now.
Anker's EufyMake E1 Finally Brings Printers Out of the Dark Ages
This ultraviolet printer prints on literally anything—canvas, wood, metal, plastic, you name it. Like all things that are the first of their kind, it also costs a heavy premium.

ASU-led SPARCS mission achieves 'first light,' marking the start of its science operations in orbit
The Star-Planet Activity Research CubeSat, or SPARCS, has captured its first images of stars from space. This milestone marks the start of its science operations in orbit.Arizona State University leads the SPARCS mission, which is funded by NASA. It is the first CubeSat mission dedicated to long-term ultraviolet monitoring of nearby low-mass stars. These stars are the most common in our galaxy and often have Earth-sized, possibly habitable planets.

The solar eruptions around May 2024 affected Earth and even our missions on Mars.
Something fundamental about black holes may be changing
New observations reveal that the relationship between ultraviolet and X-ray light in quasars has changed over billions of years. This unexpected shift suggests the structure around supermassive black holes may evolve with time, challenging a decades-old assumption.
