Pep Guardiola backs Manchester City following guilty verdict
'We will get through this together'
Former Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has posted a message on social media following the news of his former club being found guilty of financial breaches. Guardiola led City to 17 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League victory, during his 10-year reign at the club. Among reaction elsewhere, ex-City defender and academy graduate Micah Richards said he felt "absolutely devastated" after reading the Premier League's "damning" guilty verdict on the club's financial charges.

Pep Guardiola gives backing to Man City after guilty verdict: ‘We will get through this’
Pep Guardiola has broken his silence after Manchester City were found guilty of the majority of the 115 charges against them, reiterating his backing of the owners and the chairman. An independent commission, which was appointed following a four-year investigation to rule over the charges which stretch between 2009 and 2018, ruled that the current Premier League leaders had "sham contracts" arranged for a number of its commercial partners, finding that their income over eight seasons was “hugely overstated by over £830m”. The club vehemently deny the breaches with chief executive Ferran Soriano branding the process a “Premier League conspiracy theory” in a message to players and staff, while City have confirmed they will appeal against the ruling.

Man Utd v Man City: Key stats and talking points
The 199th Manchester derby takes place with City travelling to Old Trafford looking for a win which would extend their lead over rivals United to eight points after just four games. Man City v Coventry: Key stats and talking points
Life back in the Premier League after 25 years away does not get any easier for Coventry City. Manchester City flexed their muscles last time out with a 4-1 win over Crystal Palace. After only just edging past Bournemouth in their first game, new head coach Enzo Maresca has enjoyed an encouraging start in the unenviable position of replacing Pep Guardiola.
Analysis: Huge relief for Maresca's City
Manchester City showed improvement from the side who were bashed 3-0 by Arsenal in last Sunday's Community Shield - but for most of this game it looked as if Enzo Maresca was going to start with consecutive defeats. Replacing a legend is always difficult - as David Moyes experienced when Sir Alex Ferguson left neighbours Manchester United in 2013 - and the late comeback will come as a major relief in their first Premier League game without Pep Guardiola in a decade. City did not exactly promote from within when hiring Maresca, who quit as Chelsea manager at the start of 2026, but the Italian was Guardiola's City assistant in 2022-23 and would perhaps be seen as something of a continuity candidate.

Guardiola's final farewell?
It's the beginning of a defining week for Manchester City and Pep Guardiola, with Monday and Tuesday deciding whether the Premier League title race goes to the wire or comes to an abrupt halt. Arsenal face already-relegated Burnley later and City know they are likely to need to collect three points at Bournemouth on Tuesday, otherwise it will all be over. City have already won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup this season, but can they make it a domestic treble?
'City keep going from strength to strength'
"Just when you count them out, they still win two domestic trophies and are challenging for the Premier League," the former England international said. Did you know?
Empty seats 'a symptom of staggering success'
The sight of empty seats in the Manchester City end at Wembley for Saturday's FA Cup semi-final against Southampton has inevitably triggered the usual cycle of lazy jibes from rival fans. Under Pep Guardiola, a trip to England's showpiece venue has shifted from a once-in-a-generation opportunity to a routine commitment. Since 2011, City have visited the national stadium 33 times, and the weekend's clash against the Saints was Guardiola's 25th Wembley appearance alone, including the Premier League meetings with Tottenham in 2018.

Manchester City are finding their stride at the perfect time and it's the most daunting of warnings being issued simultaneously to those of an Arsenal persuasion. Chelsea frustrated and on numerous occasions threatened to do their London rivals a favour in the first half on Sunday, but it was City who stood firm, albeit whilst not creating too much themselves.
