Brian May Presents Brian Cox With Stephen Hawking Medal As STARMUS Brings Science And Music Together
Brian May has spent a lifetime demonstrating that a person doesn’t necessarily have to choose between a guitar and a telescope. The Queen guitarist and astrophysicist brought those two worlds together again in London, joining STARMUS co-founder Garik Israelian to present physicist and broadcaster Brian Cox with the 2026 Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication. […]
Anthropic's Claude Science creates the first complete ultraviolet map of the sky
Astrophysicist Brice Ménard of Johns Hopkins University used Anthropic's Claude Science to map the entire sky in ultraviolet light for the first time. AI agents downloaded data from multiple space missions, calibrated it, and filled in gaps using inpainting. Predictions averaged about ten percent deviation from actual measurements. Ménard sees the project as an example of research that simply wouldn't have gotten done without AI.
Neil deGrasse Tyson returns to Dayton to talk science and movies
Celebrated astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson is heading back to the Schuster Center Sunday, Oct. 4 courtesy of Dayton Live for Part 2 of his informative talk blending the worlds of cinema, science and pop culture.
Astrophysicists win AI grant for 'Holy Grail' project to automate laborious calibration process
Anthropic's AI for Science Program has awarded the UC Santa Cruz team $50,000 in API credits to fund the development of an automated wavelength-calibration algorithm for astronomical spectra.
Héctor Socas, astrophysicist: ‘If a more advanced civilization contacted us, they should be more afraid of us than we are of them’
Artificial intelligence, extraterrestrial life, the climate crisis, the future of work and global governance. This science communicator uses the lens of science to tackle a much broader question: what kind of civilization do we want to be?
A cosmic rule just broke—could this discovery rewrite how we count stars? - Futura-Sciences
Mechanics of the initial mass function Stars form when giant clouds of interstellar gas and dust collapse under their own gravity. To calculate the total mass of distant galaxies, scientists use the Initial Mass Function (IMF). Developed in part by astrophysicist Edwin Salpeter, this mathematical tool describes the initial distribution...
A Space Expert Hoped to Use the Eclipse as Science Class. The D.J.s Had Other Plans.
Mar Carretero-Castrillo, an astrophysicist, returned to her remote village in Spain to be in the path of totality. Hundreds of partygoers came too.
A planetarium for the brain
Neuroscientists should take a cue from astrophysicists and use planetariums to inspire awe, argues Tyler Sloan. His new film takes a first step.
Rare Pair of Improbably Light ‘Super-Puff’ Planets Is Discovered
They’re less dense than cotton candy, and they will help astrophysicists better understand the most unusual ways giant planets can form.
For the 2014 film Interstellar, director Christopher Nolan hired Caltech physicist Kip Thorne as his science consultant — and the visual simulations Thorne helped design for the film's black hole were so mathematically accurate that they generated two peer-reviewed scientific papers and became the model for how astrophysicists visualize black holes today
In late 2012, when the American film director Christopher Nolan formally took over the production of a Warner Brothers science-fiction project that had been drifting through Hollywood development since approximately 2005 (originally intended for Steven Spielberg, based on a screenplay concept the film producer Lynda Obst had developed jointly with the Caltech theoretical physicist Kip […]
Astrophysicist Paz Beniamini snags science prize — a feather in the cap for underdog Open University
In a first for the 52-year-old institution, Beniamini wins the Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists in Israel for physics based on his work on 'extreme' events
So, Trump fired the National Science Board. But what is the National Science Board?
Trump fired all 24 members of the National Science Board at the end of April. In this bite we explore what this means for the NSF, science funding, and, more broadly, the American government, with a perspective from Dr. Keivan Stassun, an astrophysicist at Vanderbilt and a recent NSB member.
Acclaimed astrophysicist and electric slam poet blend science and storytelling in upcoming UCSC lecture
The second annual Landesman Lecture features UC Santa Cruz professor Enrico Ramirez Ruiz in conversation with slam poet Jasmine Schlafke—blending science, poetry and storytelling to explore our deepest origins and shared humanity. The lecture series is made possible by UC Santa Cruz faculty retirees, Edward (Ed) and Miriam Landesman.
Astrophysicist Deborah Haarsma Connects Science with Christian Faith at Pepperdine Libraries' Frank Pack Lecture
Hosted by Pepperdine Libraries' Rushford Center, the University community was given the special honor of hearing Haarsma's insights on Christian faith and science at the 21st annual Frank Pack Distinguished Christian Scholar Lecture.
What ‘Project Hail Mary’ gets right –– and wrong –– about astrophysics
A Northeastern University astrophysicist breaks down whether Ryan Gosling’s new sci-fi movie holds up under the microscope.

Astronomer and Queen guitarist Brian May teams up with astrophysicist Derek Ward-Thompson to bring the cosmos to 3D. Plus, Frances Arnold’s game-changing technique of “directed evolution” creates enzymes with unusual capabilities. And, how did we come to think of society's toughest problems as something for individuals to manage rather than governments to regulate?
