The poison frog that fooled scientists for decades
Researchers discovered that a poison frog species described decades ago was based on a mix-up involving the wrong museum specimen. The frog tied to the official species name turned out to be brown, not the colorful animal shown in the original photo. After tracing old records and images, scientists corrected the error and reclassified the frog as part of an already-known species. The case underscores how vital museum collections are—and how even small mistakes can ripple through science for years.

When a huge earthquake struck near Kamchatka, the SWOT satellite captured an unprecedented, high-resolution view of the resulting tsunami as it crossed the Pacific. The data revealed the waves were far more complex and scattered than scientists expected, overturning the idea that large tsunamis travel as a single, stable wave. Ocean sensors confirmed the quake’s rupture was longer than earlier models suggested. Together, the findings could reshape how tsunamis are modeled and predicted.

The research raises new questions about how chemical exposure could be influencing human health behind the scenes.
Physicists found hidden order in violent proton collisions
Inside high-energy proton collisions, quarks and gluons briefly form a dense, boiling state before cooling into ordinary particles. Researchers expected this transition to change how disordered the system is, but LHC data tell a different story. This unexpected result turns out to be a direct fingerprint of quantum mechanics at work.
Maldives Health Financing Progress Matrix Assessment Report
The WHO Health Financing Progress Matrix (HFPM) is the standardized qualitative assessment of the health financing system of a country. The assessment builds on an extensive body of conceptual and empirical work, and summarizes “what matters in health financing for universal health coverage (UHC)” into a set of desirable attributes, which form the basis of the assessment. By identifying areas of strength and weakness in the current health financing system, along with priority policy directions, HFPM assessments complement monitoring of key quantitative indicators on service coverage and financial protection, now enshrined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda. HFPM assessments can be implemented within a short period and provide close-to-real-time information for policy-makers. Findings support the development of health financing strategies and technical alignment across government and external technical assistance agencies, while also providing the basis for monitoring progress over time. This allows for systematic tracking of the development and implementation of health financing policies that matter for UHC. HFPM assessments have been conducted in several countries, including in the South-East (SE) Asia Region; some have been published (Bangladesh and the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India) while others have remained unpublished (Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka)

Time-restricted eating has been widely promoted as a simple way to boost metabolic health, but new research paints a more complicated picture. When calorie intake stayed the same, an eight-hour eating window did not improve insulin sensitivity or cardiovascular markers. What did change was the body’s internal clock, which shifted based on meal timing and altered sleep patterns.
